We are excited to announce the launch of the Pigeon Forge Pocket Guide iOS app! This free app includes at-the-ready information for attractions, dining, shopping, shows, and more. Scroll through different categories to discover what the area has to offer or look for specific locations with the search feature. In addition, the app includes area weather and a map tab showing attraction locations. Let's explore what the app has to offer! The main tab on the Pigeon Forge Pocket Guide iOS app features categories including Activities & Attractions, Places to Eat, Shopping, and more. Swipe left and right to view the categories, then tap the category you want to explore. You will find an alphabetized list of area locations with a brief description. Tap on whichever location catches your eye to learn more. When you click on an attraction or location, in this case the Nascar Speedpark, you will find all the information you need including:
pertinent information for locations in the area! After you've explored some of the attractions, you might wonder if the weather will cooperate for your planned activities. Conveniently stay in the same app and get a quick overview of the weather forecast! The weather tab shows a 24 hour forecast as well as a 7 day forecast. Another great feature of this page is it displays weather alerts for the area. Weather alerts only display when one is active, so the sample page above shows no active weather alerts. The search tab allows you to discover what the area has to offer in a new way. Want to go bowling or see what your options are for getting pizza? Search "bowling" or "pizza" to find entries that include those keywords in the title, tagline, or description. Perhaps you've heard of an attraction in the area but want to learn more about it. Type in the name to pull up the entry! The middle icon along the bottom of the app is the map. In addition to showing attraction, dining, and shopping locations on the map, it can also display your current location. This is a great way to really understand how close various attractions are to each other. No more getting lost on the Parkway or in the mountains! We hope you've enjoyed learning about this free iOS app and using it to discover just how much the area has to offer! We are excited to provide this resource to our guests and all travelers who visit the area. We hope you find this app a helpful resource and would greatly appreciate if you left a 5 star review on the App store!

While the amenities on the deck have not be finalized, we have some really exciting ideas for the area that we know you will love. The deck ties in to the front porch and top level back porch, which will feature additional outdoor seating. If you need a snack after dinner, the fire pit is a great place to make s’mores. Relax by the crackling fire and enjoy nature while on your vacation. Kitchen The best way to describe the kitchen is well-equipped! The kitchen features stainless steel appliances, including a side-by-side fridge with in-door ice and water dispenser, dishwasher, microwave, stove, and oven, and some extra perks, like a toaster, a crockpot, and a Keurig Duo for your morning pick me up. So, whether the microwave is the kitchen’s main attraction for heating up leftovers from the area’s delicious restaurants, or you plan to cook a 5 course meal, you will find everything you need for planning delicious dining. Whatever you decide to eat on your vacation, the six-seat dining table near the kitchen will be a great place for the family to gather. Living Room Adjacent to the kitchen and dining area, the living room will feature an electric fireplace, comfy seating, and a queen sleeper sofa. Enjoy movies, streaming, and cable on the living room’s large smart TV. With all this cabin will have to offer, we are excited to host you in our newest vacation rental home! We want you and your family to have a fun, relaxing vacation, and this property is sure to please! If you would like to take a short hike to see a set of really nice waterfalls, think about visiting Spruce Flats Falls. These falls are located near the Tremont Institute in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park just outside of Townsend, TN. If you are staying at Mountains on My Mind, the drive to the parking area for the falls is a short 30 minutes. If you are coming from one of our other cabins, it would be closer to a 45 minute drive. This set of falls has not been listed on the official park map; however, it is becoming more popular as more people review these falls. The nice thing is that this will be one of the lesser visited falls in the region. My daughter and I hiked the trail to visit these falls early one fall morning, and we didn’t see anyone else until after we spent about 45 minutes photographing the falls from various vantage points. As we were just finishing, a guide from the Tremont Institute was bringing a group of teenagers to see the falls. On the return hike we only saw one other set of hikers on the trail heading towards the falls. The trail to Spruce Flats Falls has been rated from easy to moderate depending on who you talk to. Overall it is not a long trail as the roundtrip length is around 1.4 miles long. There is an elevation gain of about 460 feet. Now there are some steep parts and some sections of the trail that have a lot of rocks and stumps. Driving Directions:
Spruce Flats Falls will make a great half day hike if you are staying at any of the cabins Peaceful Cabin Rentals has to offer. Yep, that’s right! As part of the National Park Service’s mission to preserve animals on its land, elk were reintroduced in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2001. The herd started with 25 elk that were brought in from the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky, and then again in 2002, another 27 elk were added from the same location. These two stockings started the initial herd in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The elk were initially released into the Cataloochee area in NC, and have since expanded their range. You can still visit them in the Cataloochee valley, but you can also see them near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center just outside of Cherokee, NC. Although it is not exactly close to Pigeon Forge, being a littler over an hour’s drive, it is worth it to see these magnificent animals. The drive takes you on US-441 which is the road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee that takes you over the range of the Smoky Mountains. There are numerous overlooks along the way and also a spur leading to Clingman’s Dome. The drive in and of itself is a sight to behold. The best time to view the elk in the Smokies is the first couple of hours after sunrise and the last couple of hours before sunset. There is usually an assortment of cows, calfs and bulls in the fields off of US-441 near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. September and October are an especially good time to view the elk due to the elk rut occurring at that time. You will be able to see and hear the bull elks bugling during this time. You can also watch the dominant bull run off lesser bulls from his haram of cows. You do have to be careful this time of year as the bulls can be very aggressive. If you keep a safe distance, there are usually no problems, but every year someone tries to get too close or a vehicle stops too close to a bull and then the bull charges. I saw a truck get smashed by an elk last year when the driver stopped his truck just 10 feet from the dominant bull. It is nice that there are places to view these spectacular animals without having to travel out west. There are a few other places in the eastern US where you can see elk such as Kentucky and Pennsylvania but the herd in NC is relatively close to the Pigeon Forge area, being just over an hour away. In addition to seeing elk, there are several others sites of interest along the way. Right behind the Oconaluftee Visitor Center is the Mountain Farm Museum. Just a few miles from there is Mingus Mill which is an historic, still operating, water powered mill. Then you also have Cherokee, NC, which is only about 2 miles from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. So if you are staying at one of the cabins that Peaceful Cabin Rentals has to offer, consider taking a drive over the mountain range to check out these magnificent elk.
(Guest post by Emily) One thing we often get asked is, "What's a good place for breakfast in the Smokies?" We always recommend one of our favorite pancake restaurants – Smoky’s Pancake Cabin! Located on the Parkway, Smoky’s Pancake Cabin is approximately 10 miles from either of our pool cabins. It is a further drive if you are staying at Mountains on My Mind in Wears Valley, but in our opinion, it is definitely worth the extra few minutes of driving! Smoky's Pancake Cabin has a wide array of breakfast items, including gluten-free options. Mom and I arrived around 8:30 am on a sunny morning near the end of May. The restaurant was comfortably full with people enjoying their breakfast. We were seated immediately. Despite loving breakfast and pancakes, we needed a few minutes to figure out what we were each in the mood to eat for breakfast. Our waitress was very friendly and kept returning to our table every few minutes to see if we had made up our minds but was not pushy or rude trying to get us to order. Once we placed our orders, we were served within 15 minutes. We were very impressed with how quick and efficient the service was despite the restaurant having numerous guests. The speed of service and friendliness of the staff was only rivaled by how delicious the food was. After much deliberation, Mom ordered the mixed berry pancakes – thick, fluffy buttermilk pancakes topped with fresh fruit. According to our waitress, the fruit topping can change throughout the year depending on what fruit is in season and easy to source. Mom’s fruit topping consisted of strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. I ordered the fruit crepes, also containing the same fruit as Mom’s pancakes. I knew I needed some protein, so I didn’t have a sugar crash later in the day, and also ordered a side of eggs, cooked medium well. Mom and I decided to split a side of bacon that had four slices. We both enjoyed our food immensely.
Everything was delicious and full of flavor but still had a very homemade taste, which was wonderful. Our fruit was crisp, juicy and fresh – a distinctly different texture and taste from previously frozen fruit. The food arrived at our table still hot and slightly steaming. Our waitress kept our drinks topped off, and she promptly brought us additional items we needed for our meal, such as extra napkins and a knife after I accidentally dropped mine on the floor. When we were finished eating, she brought our check but was not pushy or rude about trying to get us to leave. The host who had seated us was also running the register, and he made sure we had enjoyed our meals. Due to COVID-19, our waitress and other staff members were wearing masks, but this did not keep any employee we encountered from being friendly and polite. Have you eaten at Smoky's Pancake Cabin? What did you order? Let us know in the comments below! (Guest post by Amanda) If you want to eat some good southern food during your next vacation to Pigeon Forge and the Great Smoky Mountains, visit Sevierville’s oldest restaurant: Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant & Farmhouse Grill. Although connected, the Farmhouse Restaurant and Farmhouse Grill are two distinct restaurants. Today I’m reviewing Applewood’s Farmhouse Grill. Location: If you head South on the Parkway, just past the Tanger Outlets you may notice a picturesque orchard on the right-hand side. Nestled between the orchards and the West Prong Little Pigeon River, Applewood Farmhouse Grill sits on the aptly named Apple Valley Road. The complex that houses the Farmhouse Grill also holds the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant, Apple Valley Creamery and Bake Shop, Apple Barn Winery, and Christmas & Candle Shop. If you are coming from one of Peaceful Cabin Rentals three luxury cabins, you can take Wears Valley Rd. to the Parkway, then make a left onto Apple Valley Road. Environment: The southern charm catches your attention before you even enter any of the restaurants or shops. Although the facility is large, the building runs longways. This keeps the parking close to the restaurants and stores. The architecture is beautiful and features gazebos, an outdoor fire pit, and porches covered in rocking chairs. When you enter the Farmhouse Grill, there is a cozy waiting area. We ate there at the start of the year, during the off season, so we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is homey, reminiscent of Cracker Barrel, but larger and brighter. Although the interior is large, it is sectioned into nice, neat little rooms so as not to feel overbearing. The large fireplace in the center of the room and cute country décor justify the name; you truly feel like you are dining in a farmhouse! We sat at a booth beneath a lovely painting of the mountains in fall, and were soon brought a basket of Apple Fritters and Apple Butter along with glasses of Apple Julep. Food:
From the start, the food is delicious! However, the Apple Fritters definitely steal the show. The crisp-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside fritters are the ideal vehicle for that sweet apple flavor. The best way to describe the Apple Fritters is like little apple cakes sprinkled with powdered sugar. Dip it in the Apple Butter, and your taste buds will thank you! The Apple Julep, a blend of fruit juices, is also delicious, but I was satisfied after one glass. If you can’t get enough of the fruity drink, though, they freely share the simple recipe on the wall of the waiting area. The food is a little pricey but comparable to many of the restaurants in the area. At the time of writing, their website mentions a $9.99 weekday lunch special, so there are ways to eat at the Farmhouse Grill while staying on budget. I ordered the Apple Julep Grilled Chicken, which came with soup, potatoes, and a Farmhouse Side. I chose their creamy Loaded Potato Soup, swapped my potatoes for green beans, and settled on Mac & Cheese for my side. Between the portion sizes and multiple sides, the food was plenty to fill me up. The Apple Relish was a delicious take on grilled chicken, and the sides did not disappoint. While I can’t remember what other members of my family ordered when we ate there, I do know that my mom (who, by the way, does a fabulous job ensuring guests have a wonderful stay at our cabins!) ordered the veggie soup. This side is a hearty soup filled with veggies, and she enjoyed it. Service: The friendly locals are part of the appeal of Pigeon Forge, and Applewood Farmhouse Grill staffs several! Service was prompt, and our food arrived quickly. Now, it was the off-season when we ate there, so there might be a wait during the summer or on peak weekends. If you do find yourself waiting to be seated, the porches provide plenty of seating for your party. Summary: Applewood Farmhouse Grill has a distinct charm, evidenced in both the setting and the food, that captures the essence of Pigeon Forge. We had a late start to our day, so although it was almost noon Applewood Farmhouse Grill was the first meal of our day. This was the perfect jump start to our day as we prepared to run errands and perform maintenance on the cabins. I would definitely eat at the Farmhouse Grill again. I would also love to explore the other shops on site and compare Applewood’s other dining options with the Grill. Sadly, the other shops weren’t open when we were there since it was the off season. But I guess exploring more of what Applewood has to offer can be an excuse to come back to the area soon! Have you eaten at Applewood Farmhouse Grill? Share your favorite menu item in the comments! Laurel Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains and with good reason. The trailhead for this hike that most folks take to visit these famous falls is located along Fighting Creek Gap Rd between Metcalf Bottoms and the Sugarlands Visitor Center. This is one of a small number of paved hiking trails in the Smoky Mountains. The amount of elevation that you gain to reach these falls is just over 300 feet, and it is only a 2.3 mile roundtrip hike. I have yet to hike this trail because it is generally very crowded and the parking area is generally full. It is recommended that if you want to hike this trail that you do so early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Most websites that reference this trail rate it as an easy trail, but there are some steep drop offs, and bears are routinely sighted in this area. Incidentally, if you are staying at Mountains on My Mind, you can take a quick 11 mile drive to reach this trailhead. Actually, if you are standing on the porch at Mountains on My Mind and look to the left, the long mountain range that you see is Cove Mountain. Laurel Falls is on the opposite side of Cove Mountain from this vacation cabin. When most folks embark on the Laurel Falls Trail from the parking area, they typically hike the 1.15 miles to the falls, which is all paved, and then hike back to their vehicle. The trail however, extends on and up the mountain. In fact, Laurel Falls Trail goes all the way to the top of Cove Mountain and end at Cove Mountain Trail 1/10 of a mile from the old Cove Mountain Fire Tower which is at the peak of Cove Mountain. After we purchased Mountains on My Mind, I learned that there is a path to an old logging road that leads up to the old fire tower, which is now used for weather research on top of Cove Mountain. I knew this would be an awesome hike to take from the cabin, and I knew it would be a solid day hike. I filmed our journey, and you can check it out below: So, on one of our stays, I took my youngest daughter with me, and we set out from the porch of Mountains on My Mind on an epic hike to Laurel Falls, using the path less traveled. We hiked all the way up the logging road and checked out the weather tower at the summit of Cove Mountain, then found Laurel Falls Trail and hiked all the way down to the falls. We hung out at the falls for about 45 minutes or so and ate some snacks, re-hydrated ourselves, took some photos, and then finally headed back up Cove Mountain. Altogether, from the time we left the porch of Mountains on My Mind until the time we returned to the cabin, it was about 8 hours. From the cabin to the top of Cove Mountain is about 4 miles; then it was roughly another 3 miles to Laurel Falls. Having said all that, Laurel Falls is not the only destination available from this cabin. Once you reach Cove Mountain Trail, if you go east on the trail, in 8.7 miles you will reach the Sugarlands Visitor Center. There and back again to Sugarlands from this cabin is probably too much to do in a single day; however, you should be able to hike to Sugarlands in under 8 hours I’m guessing and have someone pick you up at the Visitor Center. The nice thing about this is that from what I understand, going in this direction the 8.7 mile hike from the Fire Tower is all downhill to Sugarlands. I think I will try this next. Also, once you are on Laurel Falls Trail, heading down, at about .9 miles you will hit an intersection with Little Greenbrier Trail. This trail will take you to Little Brier Gap Trail which will take you to Metcalf Bottoms. You will be able to visit the historic Little Greenbrier School along the way. From the intersection of Little Greenbrier Trail and Laurel Falls Trail, this jaunt is a little under 4 miles. So that is another possibility for a day hike, or to simply just hike to Metcalf Bottoms and have someone pick you up.
What was so cool was that we were able to hike all the way to famous Laurel Falls from this cabin without ever having to get in a vehicle. It was an incredible day! While staying at A Pearl's Splash pool cabin in the spring of 2019, we had a short block of time for a quick hike. The hike to Baskins Creek Falls fit the bill, and I tend to always like waterfall hikes anyway. You can watch my video overview of the hike here: We did this hike in mid-spring, and we actually found that Pink Lady Slippers were blooming as a few were right on the trail. This hike takes you up over a part of a mountain that was burned in the fires of 2016. Although you can get a glimpse of how destructive the fire was, you can also see how the natural re-growth process is coming along. The trail itself is typical of many waterfall hikes; you have to go down to reach the waterfalls, and in this case, what goes down, must come back up. There is a long steep section as you get closer to the falls which is easier going down than coming up, but this is a doable hike for most folks. The trail itself is not harsh, with much of it being smooth, and what is not smooth has roots and rocks in places. There is one main creek crossing, where you will need waterproof shoes or boots if you don’t want your feet to get wet. It is easily crossable, but it is a few inches deep. Driving Directions: From traffic light #8 in Gatlinburg, you will turn South on Historic Nature Trail Road. At about .7 miles, you will need to stay to the right to get on Cherokee Orchard Road. At about 2.2 miles, the road will split and you will be on a one way loop. At .9 miles on the loop, you will be able to make a right turn onto the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Go .2 miles and you can pull off at the Baskins Creek Trail Trailhead. Trail Directions: Starting from the trail head you will have a gradual hike uphill, and after about .25 miles it will level out and give you some nice mountain views. This is the section where the 2016 fires went through. You will cross over a ridge and then start heading down with a gradual descent. At about .9 miles you will need to cross Falls Branch creek by foot. In a non-rainy period, it will be a few inches deep; if there is heavy rain, I am not sure what it will look like. After crossing the creek, the trail will turn to the left and start a pretty steady and steep descent. This is the part that is not so fun on the return trip. At about 1.3 miles in, you will hit a junction where you can either go straight, which will lead you another 1.3 miles to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, or you can go left. You want to go left at this junction to go to the falls. There is a sign so not to worry. In roughly .2 miles you will reach Baskins Creek Falls. The last little bit has somewhat of a small rock scramble and gets a little steep for about 40 yards or so. Overall this is a nice set of falls and not too bad of a hike. Most folks would rate this as an easy hike, although there are some steep sections as with most waterfall hikes. This hike would be an easy half day adventure if you are staying at any one of the cabins that Peaceful Cabin Rentals offers.
(Guest post by Amanda) If you get the hankerin’ for some wings next time you vacation in Pigeon Forge, TN, Blue Moose is the place to go. This family sports grill, located between the Parkway and Teaster Lane, is known for its award-winning wings, hearty burgers, and delicious appetizers. We have been numerous times, and it never disappoints! Less than 2 miles from one of our cabins, Cinematic Splash, Blue Moose is a place you won’t want to miss. Environment: The restaurant is very clean with indoor booths and tables and outdoor dining for when the weather is nice. Though it is a sports grill, the atmosphere is inviting and family-friendly. If your team is playing, it’s impossible to miss the action no matter where you are seated in the restaurant. Many tables have their own TV that can be set to the game of your choice, or you can watch the game on one of the numerous TVs hanging on the wall. If sports aren’t your thing, you can put on another channel. For example, Dad changed our TV to the Pursuit outdoors channel while we ate. Personally, I think too many TVs can feel overwhelming; but the good news is you can turn off the TV at your table, and the overall volume in the restaurant is not overbearing. A neat touch they’ve added to the dining experience is the ability to download an app and request songs to play. Dad has used this feature before, and they played his request. I haven’t personally used the app, but that’s mostly because I was too busy enjoying the food! Service: Although we have been a number of times, often with different servers, the staff have always been friendly and helpful with that unmistakable Tennessee charm. Food:
The food is why we go to the restaurants, right? Well, this food won’t disappoint! First, let’s talk appetizers. On our first visit, we ordered a Queso Dip’N Chips Starter. Our waiter gave us the idea to swap the corn tortilla chips for Blue’s Tater Chips, and I’m so glad we took his advice! The queso is a creamy white cheese with rich, fresh jalapeno flavor. I don’t do spicy, but even I love their queso. The peppers provide the perfect amount of kick without burning your mouth. Paired with the savory homemade potato chips, this app is the perfect start to your meal. I wish I could tell you about some of their other appetizers, but the queso is so good we always end up ordering it! Their wings made them famous, so of course we need to talk about these. We order the boneless wings because they’re easier to eat and so tender. Select from a wide variety of flavors—with a helpful spicy index—and even try samples of flavors before placing your order. The wings come with ranch, blue cheese, and some veggies (think carrots and celery). I’m not a fan of ranch, but their ranch is creamy and delicious. It provides a perfect coolness to balance the flavor of the wings. Some of our favorite wing flavors are their Black Jack, Wild Ranch, and Italian Parmesan. You can also purchase a bottle of their Signature Wing Sauce to bring home. Our Experiences: With all the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer, it’s easy to miss some true gems. Blue Moose is one of those unique places that you don’t want to overlook! Last Fall was the first time we visited Blue Moose. We take a hands-on approach with our cabins to make sure guests always have a great experience. Several times a year, we head up the mountains to take care of little maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning items, like new landscaping outside of Mountains On My Mind, doing a deep clean of the theater room at Cinematic Splash, or decorating A Pearl’s Splash for Christmas. On one of these short trips, we decided to finally give Blue Moose a try. Friends recommended we try the restaurant, so we stopped in when we arrived to Pigeon Forge on a Friday. We spent Saturday and Sunday doing repairs, maintenance work, and deep-cleaning at the cabins, so we were exhausted by dinner time on Sunday. After throwing out some dinner options, we unanimously decided to return to Blue Moose even though we ate there just two days ago! The restaurant drew us back for several reasons. First, the location is convenient and easy to get to. Second, we had worked up an appetite and knew Blue Moose would provide fast, friendly service. Third, the atmosphere is welcoming and casual, so it was a great chance to unwind at the end of the day. And, of course, delicious food was a big factor in our decision! For whatever reason, we have struggled with leftovers. The first night we ate at Blue Moose, we ordered a large platter of wings expecting left overs. But nope, we finished off the appetizer and all the wings. So when we went back on Sunday, we ordered a larger platter of wings and two Queso Dip’N Chips apps, planning to have leftovers. Unfortunately, we all goofed up and assumed someone else had the leftovers. It was a heart-breaking moment the next day when we realized we left the leftovers sitting on the table. Naturally, we were paranoid about forgetting our leftovers the next time we ate there. We did better and remembered to bring them with us, but then someone (coughMomcough) forgot to take the queso out of the plastic to-go container when she reheated it. I don’t recommend eating melted plastic in your queso. But finally, we succeeded in bringing back left-overs and heating them up! The food is just as good when reheated as leftovers. Sweet, delicious success! But our own goofs aside, Blue Moose is worth a visit. The food is fabulous, and it’s a great place to make memories with family and friends. If you’ve been to Blue Moose, share your favorite menu item in the comments below! We are only three days away from one of the spookiest nights of the year – Halloween! If your kids are disappointed about not being home to trick or treat through the neighborhood, never fear! There are several ways for them to still get plenty of candy for Mom and Dad to snack from when the kids are sleeping.
One of these options is the annual Halloween Trick or Treat at The Island in Pigeon Forge. The businesses at The Island participate in the usual trick or treating activities, plus there is a costume contest and a Halloween parade. If you are in costume, you can also purchase half-priced unlimited ride tickets. A live bluegrass band will be performing on the Ole Smoky Stage from 5-11 pm. Another fun way to participate in the festivities is at the Dollywood Harvest Festival. Throughout the day, park attendees can watch talented artisans create the pumpkin displays that are located throughout Dollywood. At night, many of these displays are lit up as giant jack-o-lanterns. There is also glow-in-the-dark face painting, as well as specialty pumpkin flavored foods. This event lasts through November 3, so don’t worry if you can’t make it before or on Halloween. Do you want to participate in the holiday festivities, but the thought of walking around in the cold is not appealing to you? Then the Wonder of Magic Halloween Spooktacular magic show at WonderWorks is the event for you! Star magician Terry Evanswood is the longest performing show headliner in Pigeon Forge. Running through November 2, this show is the perfect activity for the entire family to experience together. Enjoy your Halloween! |
